A Taxing Issue for Smokers [infographic]

Enjoy yesterday’s article on the cigarette tax? Below is an infographic with some more details.

State and local cigarette taxes brought in $17.1 billion in 2011, and 19 states plus the District of Columbia have increased cigarette taxes in the past three years. Just as is the case with the beer tax, Missouri has the lowest cigarette tax (per pack), $.20, whereas New York has the highest tax, $4.35.

Since 2000, only Missouri, North Dakota and California have not increased their cigarette taxes showing that states are not afraid to raise this particular tax rate. Check the per-pack cigarette tax rate in your state by in today’s infographic, below.
